How to Integrate Legacy Devices Into Your Smart Home

The biggest misconception about smart homes is that you need to replace everything with "smart" versions. You do not. That $300 window AC unit works fine, it just needs a $25 IR blaster to become controllable. Your perfectly functional ceiling fan does not need a $200 smart fan replacement, it needs a $20 smart switch. The best smart home integrates what you already own.
Here is my playbook for making legacy devices part of a modern smart home without throwing anything away.
The Integration Toolkit
There are five main tools for bridging old and new technology. Each solves a different type of legacy device:

Smart Plugs: The Gateway Drug
The easiest integration. Plug anything with a mechanical power switch into a smart plug and you can turn it on/off remotely, on a schedule, or via automation. The device must have a physical toggle that stays in "on" when power is restored. This works for:
- Table and floor lamps
- Drip coffee makers (not pod machines)
- Slow cookers and rice cookers
- Box fans and space heaters (check wattage rating on the plug)
- Sound machines and humidifiers with physical dials
- Holiday lights and decorations

IR Blasters: Control Anything With a Remote
If a device has an infrared remote control, you can automate it with an IR blaster. The Broadlink RM4 Mini ($25) is the standard choice. It learns IR codes from your existing remotes and transmits them on demand from Home Assistant.
Common use cases:
- Window AC units: Turn on/off, set temperature, change fan speed, all from HA. Pair with a temperature sensor for thermostat-like behavior.
- Older TVs and audio equipment: Power, input switching, volume control.
- Ceiling fans with IR remotes: Speed control, light toggle, timer settings.
- Space heaters with remotes: Temperature and timer control with safety automations.

Smart Switches: Make Existing Wiring Smart
For hardwired devices (ceiling fans, overhead lights, bathroom exhaust fans), replacing the wall switch with a smart switch is the cleanest integration. You keep the existing device and just swap the switch.
Options depend on your wiring. Older homes without a neutral wire need specific switches (Lutron Caseta works without neutral). Newer homes with neutral wires can use any Zigbee or Z-Wave smart switch. Our switches vs bulbs guide covers the decision in detail.
Dry Contact Relays: The Engineer's Favorite
A dry contact relay simulates a button press on a circuit. It is the electrical equivalent of the SwitchBot Bot, it momentarily closes a circuit as if you pressed a physical button. This is how you make old garage door openers, gate systems, and sprinkler controllers smart.
The Shelly 1 ($12) is a compact relay that fits inside the existing device's enclosure. Wire it in parallel with the existing wall button, and now you can trigger the device from HA while keeping the physical button functional.
What Is Not Worth Retrofitting
Some devices are better replaced than hacked:
- Old thermostats: The efficiency gains from a smart thermostat (proper scheduling, geofencing, learning) pay for the $150 device within a year. Retrofitting a mercury thermostat with a relay is possible but messy.
- Incandescent light fixtures: LED smart bulbs use 80% less power. The energy savings alone justify replacement.
- Security systems older than 10 years: Modern wireless systems (like Ring Alarm or a DIY Zigbee setup) are cheaper, more capable, and do not require professional monitoring contracts.
