Remote monitoring is not about obsessively checking cameras while you are on vacation. It is about having the right alerts, the right access, and the right automations so your house takes care of itself, and tells you immediately when something goes wrong.

Secure Remote Access: Do It Right

First things first: how do you access your Home Assistant instance from outside your home network? There are secure ways and there are ways that will get your smart home hacked. Let me be clear about both.

Good Options

  • Nabu Casa (Home Assistant Cloud): $6.50/month subscription that creates a secure, encrypted tunnel to your HA instance. No port forwarding, no DNS configuration, no security certificates to manage. It just works. This is what I use because the convenience-to-security ratio is unbeatable.
  • Tailscale/WireGuard VPN: Free, secure, and keeps your HA instance completely invisible to the internet. You install the Tailscale app on your phone and it creates a private network back to your home. Slightly more setup, but zero recurring cost.
  • Cloudflare Tunnel: Free tier available. Creates an encrypted tunnel without exposing any ports on your router. Good if you also want to share access with family members without VPN apps.
NEVER do this: Do not port-forward your Home Assistant instance directly to the internet (port 8123 or any port). It takes less than 24 hours for bots to find open HA instances, and a single misconfigured password or unpatched vulnerability gives an attacker full control of your smart home, including your locks, cameras, and alarm system.

What to Monitor While Away

You do not need to monitor everything. Focus on the things that cause real damage or safety risks if left unattended:

  • Water leaks: Under sinks, near water heater, washing machine, dishwasher. Sensors are $12-15 each and can save thousands. See our leak sensor guide.
  • Door and window status: Know if something is open that should not be.
  • Camera feeds: Front door and main entry points. Not for live viewing, but for reviewing if an alert triggers.
  • Temperature extremes: If your HVAC fails in winter, pipes can freeze and burst. A simple automation alerts you if indoor temp drops below 55F.
  • Power status: A smart plug that monitors uptime. If it goes offline, your power is out.

Travel Mode Automations

Before you leave, activate a "Travel Mode" that adjusts your smart home for an empty house:

  • Simulate presence: Randomly turn lights on and off in different rooms on a schedule that mimics your normal patterns. A few lights in the evening, TV bias light for a couple hours, porch light at dusk.
  • Heighten security: Enable motion alerts on cameras that normally run silently. Arm your security system if you have one. Send notifications for any door/window sensor activations.
  • Reduce HVAC: Set thermostat to a wider range (60-80F) to save energy while still preventing freezing or extreme heat damage.
  • Shut off unnecessary water: If you have a smart water valve, close the main supply to prevent catastrophic leaks. Leave enough water for irrigation if needed.
The presence simulation trick: Do not just turn lights on at 7 PM and off at 11 PM every night. That pattern is obvious. Instead, randomize times by +/- 30 minutes each day, vary which rooms are lit, and occasionally leave a bathroom light on for 10 minutes at random intervals. The goal is to look like someone is actually home, not running a script.

Alert Configuration for Travel

When you are home, you can tolerate some notification noise. When traveling, every alert should be meaningful and actionable. Here is how I adjust:

  1. Disable all motion alerts for interior sensors (you know nobody is home).
  2. Enable all perimeter alerts (exterior cameras, door/window sensors).
  3. Keep critical alerts (water leak, smoke, CO, temperature extreme) at maximum priority with alarm tones.
  4. Send a daily "all clear" summary at 8 AM with battery levels, device status, and any events from the past 24 hours.

The daily summary is important. It gives you peace of mind without needing to open the app. If the summary arrives, your home is fine. If it does not arrive, something might be wrong with your HA instance or internet, which is itself a useful signal.

Sharing Access With Housesitters or Neighbors

If someone is checking on your house, give them limited access. Home Assistant supports multiple user accounts with configurable permissions. Create a "Guest" account that can see camera feeds and control lights but cannot modify automations, unlock doors, or access the admin panel.

For non-technical neighbors, skip HA entirely. Set up a simple notification that texts them if a critical alert fires, with a pre-written message explaining what to do ("water leak detected near water heater, please turn the red valve clockwise to shut off water, then call me").

Before your next trip: Set up Nabu Casa or Tailscale for remote access (15 minutes). Create a Travel Mode automation that adjusts lights, security, and HVAC (30 minutes).
