What to Back Up (and What to Skip)

You cannot (and should not) back up every device. A UPS sized for your entire house would cost thousands. Instead, prioritize the devices that maintain security, connectivity, and awareness.

Priority devices for UPS backup:
Critical (must back up):
- Internet router and modem (~15W combined)
- Smart home hub / Home Assistant server (~10-25W)
- Zigbee/Z-Wave coordinator (part of hub power)

Important (back up if budget allows):
- One security camera at main entry (~8W)
- Network switch if your setup uses wired Ethernet (~10W)

Skip (too high power draw):
- Smart TVs, speakers, displays
- Appliances on smart plugs
- WiFi mesh satellite nodes (main node is sufficient)

The goal is not to maintain your full smart home experience during an outage. The goal is to keep your router online (so phones still have WiFi), your hub running (so security automations and leak sensors still work), and one camera recording (so you have security coverage). Everything else can wait for the power to come back.

Sizing Your UPS

UPS capacity is measured in VA (Volt-Amps) or Watts. To calculate how long a UPS will keep your devices running, add up the wattage of everything you plan to connect and compare it to the UPS's rated capacity.

A typical smart home backup setup draws about 40-50W total: router (12W), modem (8W), Home Assistant mini PC (15W), and one PoE camera (10W). A 600VA/360W UPS (about $70, like the APC BE600M1) will run this setup for approximately 2-3 hours. A 1500VA/900W UPS (about $150, like the CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD) will run the same setup for 6+ hours, which covers the vast majority of residential power outages.

Quick math: Take the UPS watt-hour rating (check the manufacturer's runtime chart), divide by your total load in watts. The result is approximate runtime in hours.

Example: CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD provides ~360Wh at 50W load = ~7 hours runtime. That is enough to survive most residential outages without any intervention.

UPS Features That Matter for Smart Homes

USB or network monitoring: Many UPS units have a USB port that connects to your Home Assistant server for monitoring. The NUT (Network UPS Tools) integration in Home Assistant reads battery level, estimated runtime, and power status. This enables automations: when UPS switches to battery, send a notification. When battery drops below 30%, send an urgent alert. When power restores, send an all-clear. These automations turn a dumb battery into a smart power management system.

Pure sine wave output: Some cheaper UPS units produce simulated sine wave power that can cause issues with sensitive electronics. For a home hub or NAS, pure sine wave output is preferable. The APC Back-UPS Pro and CyberPower PFC Sinewave series both offer pure sine wave output. For a simple router and modem backup, simulated sine wave is fine.

Surge protection: Every UPS includes surge protection, which is valuable on its own for protecting your smart home hub and networking equipment from power spikes. Even if you never experience a power outage, the surge protection alone justifies the investment for protecting equipment that costs more to replace than the UPS itself.

My Setup

I run a CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD UPS connected to my router, cable modem, Home Assistant mini PC, and a PoE injector feeding one outdoor camera. Total load is approximately 45W. The UPS provides about 7 hours of runtime, which has covered every outage I have experienced. The NUT integration reports battery status to Home Assistant, and I have automations that send a notification when power is lost and another when it is restored.

During a power outage, my smart home functionality is reduced but not eliminated. My Zigbee devices continue working through the hub because the Zigbee coordinator is on the UPS. Battery-powered sensors (leak sensors, motion sensors, door contacts) continue operating normally because they have their own batteries. My smart locks run on internal batteries and are unaffected. The one camera on the UPS continues recording to the local NVR. I receive notifications via WiFi (router is on UPS) and cellular (phone always works).

Test your UPS: After setup, unplug the UPS from the wall outlet and verify everything stays online. Check that your Home Assistant automations trigger correctly. Time how long everything runs on battery. Do this test annually because UPS batteries degrade over time and typically need replacement every 3-5 years. A UPS with a dead battery is just a power strip.

A UPS is the insurance policy for your smart home infrastructure. The cost is modest ($70-150), the setup takes 10 minutes (plug things in), and the peace of mind during the next power outage is genuine. When your neighbors are resetting their routers, re-pairing their smart locks, and re-configuring their thermostats after the power comes back, your smart home just continues working as if nothing happened. That is the resilience that separates a well-built smart home from one that is held together by constant power supply.
