Tuya vs Shelly: Budget Smart Home Devices Compared

If you are building a smart home on a budget, you have probably narrowed your options down to two ecosystems: Tuya and Shelly. Both make affordable smart plugs, switches, sensors, and relays. Both integrate with Home Assistant. But the way they approach smart home philosophy is fundamentally different, and that difference matters more than the $5 price gap.

I have about 15 Shelly devices and 8 Tuya devices in my home. Here is the honest comparison.

The Core Difference

Tuya is a cloud-first platform. Devices connect to Tuya's servers in China, and the Smart Life app is the primary control interface. Local control exists but it is a secondary feature, not the design philosophy.

Shelly is a local-first platform. Every Shelly device runs a local web server and supports MQTT out of the box. Cloud connectivity (Shelly Cloud) is optional and can be disabled entirely. The device works on your local network without ever touching the internet.

Why this matters: When Tuya's cloud had an outage in 2024, millions of smart home devices worldwide stopped responding to commands. When to Choose Tuya

Tuya makes sense in specific situations:

  • You want the absolute cheapest option. Tuya-based plugs and bulbs from AliExpress can be $5-8 each. If you are buying 30 devices and every dollar matters, the savings add up.
  • You plan to flash custom firmware. Many Tuya devices use ESP8266/ESP32 chips that can be flashed with Tasmota or ESPHome, turning a cheap cloud device into a fully local one. The device becomes a $5 ESPHome sensor platform.
  • You need a specific device type. Tuya's white-label ecosystem is enormous. If you need a smart valve, a soil moisture sensor, or a pool pump controller, chances are someone makes a Tuya version. Shelly's product line is more limited.

When to Choose Shelly

Shelly wins in most other scenarios:

  • Local control is non-negotiable. Every Shelly device works locally out of the box. No firmware flashing, no hacking, no cloud account required. This is the biggest advantage and the reason I use Shelly as my default.
  • You want reliability and safety. Shelly devices are UL-listed and CE-certified. The build quality is consistent because Shelly is a single brand (Allterco), not a white-label ecosystem with hundreds of unknown manufacturers.
  • In-wall switches and relays. Shelly's in-wall relays (Shelly 1, Shelly Plus 1, Shelly Plus 2PM) are best-in-class for making existing switches smart. They are tiny, install behind the existing switch plate, and keep the physical switch functional. This is Shelly's home turf.
  • Energy monitoring matters. Shelly plugs and switches with power monitoring report accurate wattage, voltage, and current data locally. This feeds directly into Home Assistant's energy dashboard.
The hybrid approach: Use Shelly for permanent, reliability-critical installations (in-wall switches, power monitoring plugs, anything safety-related). Use Tuya (flashed with ESPHome) for experimental or temporary setups where you want cheap hardware to tinker with. This gives you the best of both worlds.

The Firmware Flashing Factor

Tuya's biggest advantage for tinkerers is also its biggest limitation for everyone else. Stock Tuya firmware is cloud-dependent and phones home constantly. But many Tuya devices can be flashed with open-source firmware (Tasmota, ESPHome) that makes them fully local. The catch: newer Tuya devices use proprietary chips (Beken, RTL8710) that cannot be flashed with community firmware. Before buying a Tuya device with the intent to flash it, verify the chip model is compatible.

Shelly devices do not need firmware replacement. Their stock firmware already provides full local control, MQTT support, and open API access. You can optionally flash ESPHome onto Shelly devices for tighter HA integration, but it is a nice-to-have, not a requirement.

My Recommendation

For most people building a smart home in 2026, Shelly is the better default choice. The extra $5-10 per device buys you reliable local control without firmware hacking, consistent build quality, and an ecosystem that does not depend on a cloud server in another country to function.

Use Tuya when you have a specific need that Shelly does not cover, or when you are an experienced tinkerer who enjoys flashing custom firmware on cheap hardware.

Best starting combo: Shelly Plug S for energy monitoring smart plugs ($15 each), Shelly Plus 1 for in-wall switch automation ($12 each).
