What Is Matter and Why Should You Care?

"Matter compatible" now appears on product boxes for lights, plugs, locks, and thermostats across nearly every major smart home brand. Matter is not a wireless radio like Zigbee or Thread. It's an application layer standard, a shared language for how devices describe themselves and respond to commands, and it's the reason a bulb bought today can join Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa at the same time without three separate hubs.
What Matter Actually Is
Matter is a certification and compatibility standard launched in October 2022 by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), the same industry body formerly known as the Zigbee Alliance. The CSA's board includes Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung SmartThings, along with hundreds of member companies ranging from chipmakers to lock manufacturers. Matter's job is narrow but important: define one consistent way for a device to say "I am a light bulb, here is my on/off state, here is my brightness" so that any Matter-aware controller can understand and command it, regardless of which company built the app.
Before Matter, a Philips Hue bulb paired to Apple HomeKit spoke a different application protocol than the same bulb paired to a Zigbee2MQTT setup. Matter standardizes that layer across brands, which is why a Matter certified device works identically whether you control it from an iPhone, a Google Nest Hub, or Amazon Alexa.
Matter Is Not a Radio Protocol
This is the point people most often get wrong, and it's the reason Matter needs to be understood separately from Thread or Zigbee. Matter is an application layer standard that runs on top of an existing IP capable network. It does not define its own radio hardware. Instead, Matter traffic travels over one of three transports:
- WiFi: used by higher bandwidth devices like cameras, video doorbells, and some plugs, where power draw is less of a constraint.
- Thread: the low power IPv6 mesh protocol used by battery powered sensors, locks, and bulbs, where the difference between three months and two years of battery life matters.
- Ethernet: used by some fixed hub and border router hardware.
Matter explicitly does not run over Zigbee or Z-Wave directly. A device that only speaks classic Zigbee (not Thread) needs a bridge, a piece of software or hardware that translates the Zigbee application layer into a Matter-visible endpoint. Aqara, Philips Hue, and SmartThings hubs all ship bridge functionality that exposes their existing Zigbee device fleets to Matter controllers this way, but the underlying Zigbee radio traffic itself never becomes Matter traffic; it's translated at the hub.
Multi-Admin: The Feature That Actually Changes Daily Use
Matter's most practical benefit for households with mixed phones (some family members on iPhone, some on Android) is multi-admin support. A single Matter device can be commissioned into multiple ecosystems simultaneously: the same smart plug can appear in Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa at once, each app controlling it independently, with state changes reflected across all three.
Before Matter, adding a device to a second ecosystem usually meant either buying a duplicate device or resetting and re-pairing, losing access from the first app. Multi-admin removes that tradeoff for anything Matter certified. In practice this means a couple who split between iPhone and Android, or a household running both an Amazon Echo for voice control and Apple Home for automations, can share the same physical devices without compatibility gymnastics.

This is a meaningful purchase signal because it guarantees the device implements the standardized data model correctly, rather than a vague marketing claim of "works with most smart home apps."
Brands that have shipped Matter certified products across most of their 2026 lineup include Philips Hue (bulbs and the Hue Bridge Pro), Eve (sensors and plugs with Thread radios), Yale and Schlage (locks), Nanoleaf (Essentials line), TP-Link Kasa and Tapo (plugs and switches), and Aqara (hubs and sensors). Checking for the actual certification logo, not just "smart home compatible" language, avoids devices that only support a proprietary bridge-based workaround.
What Matter Does Not Solve
Matter certification requires hardware capable of running the Matter stack, which in practice usually means a device needs either a WiFi radio, a Thread radio, or Ethernet, plus sufficient processing headroom and (for many devices) a firmware update path. Older devices built before Matter existed, particularly budget WiFi plugs and bulbs from three or more years ago, frequently lack the flash memory or radio hardware needed to ever receive a Matter firmware update, regardless of manufacturer intent.
Matter also doesn't retroactively fix devices whose manufacturer has stopped supporting them. A handful of brands promised Matter updates around the 2022 launch and later quietly dropped support for older SKUs, leaving early adopters without the update they were told to expect. Checking a manufacturer's actual published Matter update list, rather than relying on general "Matter coming soon" marketing from launch, is worth the five minutes before buying older stock at a discount.
Matter also does not eliminate the need for a border router if your Matter devices use Thread as their transport. A Thread capable Matter bulb still needs a Thread Border Router (Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, Nest Hub 2nd Gen, or an Eero 6+ router, among others) somewhere on your network to bridge the Thread mesh to your WiFi and the internet. Matter vs Zigbee and Z-Wave: Where Each Fits
It's worth being precise about layers here because Matter gets compared to Zigbee and Z-Wave in ways that conflate two different things. Zigbee and Z-Wave (and Thread) are radio and mesh networking protocols, they define how devices physically talk to each other over the air. Matter is a layer above that, defining how devices describe their capabilities and accept commands once a network connection already exists.

This means Matter doesn't retire Zigbee or Z-Wave as networking protocols; a Zigbee bulb and a Matter over Thread bulb can both live on your network, with a bridge exposing the Zigbee device to your Matter controller. It's an additive standard, not a replacement mandate.
Should You Wait for Matter Before Buying?
For most purchases in 2026, buying Matter certified where available is the sensible default, particularly for anyone whose household splits across iPhone and Android or runs more than one voice assistant. The multi-admin capability alone removes a real point of household friction.
That said, a well reviewed Zigbee or Z-Wave device without Matter support is still a reasonable purchase if it's meaningfully better on price, features, or availability. The ecosystem is additive: adding Matter devices doesn't break your existing Zigbee or Z-Wave setup, and a bridge-capable hub lets both generations coexist indefinitely. There's no forcing function that makes older, non-Matter devices stop working.
Checking Compatibility Before You Buy
Because Matter support, Thread radio presence, and ecosystem compatibility vary even within a single manufacturer's product line, checking a specific model number against your existing setup before purchase avoids returns. The device compatibility checker cross references brand, protocol, and ecosystem to flag whether a given device will actually join your Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Home Assistant setup, and whether it needs a bridge, a Thread Border Router, or nothing extra at all.
